Our goal is to make every day and every round at Mountaintop a memorable experience.

From day one, Discovery Land Company knew that their creation of exceptional golf course was at the heart of what Mountaintop Golf & Lake Club would become. Three seasons of dramatic change in a spectacular setting deserved the very best in design that we could find.

The right design begins with the right Designer. Tom Fazio is respected among the greats in the architectural design of golf courses. A fanatic for perfection, he walked the area for days envisioning what could be; how he could sculpt a course that would capitalize on the immense natural beauty and topography of a plateau in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The goal? Design and build a course that blends into the environment with breathtaking views at every hole, state-of-the-art engineering to ensure a minimum number of “cart path only” days, and a variety of golf experiences from challenging to laid back. As a resident of nearby Lake Toxaway, we felt that his love of the area would be reflected in this project and we were right!

Golf Course Architecture was an all-in-the-family pursuit for Tom Fazio straight out of high school in 1962. A decade later his success led to a company of his own in Jupiter, Florida. His courses are often noted as among the nation’s top-100. Fazio is noted for having more courses on that list than any of his peers. He has been named Best Modern Day Golf Course Architect three times by Golf Digest and is one of only two designers to receive the Old Tom Morris Award from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America.

Tom came to the Cashiers plateau in the mid-80s and has only designed six courses here, three of which are in Cashiers; Mountaintop, Wade Hampton, and High Hampton.
